How It Works
For Citizens
BlueJay helps drivers present a fuller picture of who they are before an officer reaches the vehicle. Through their BlueJay Profile, drivers can share first languages, disabilities, medical needs, mental health considerations, and other helpful, humanizing details.
The BlueJay Driver Profile
Your Profile Includes:
- Profile photo
- First language
- Occupation (a chance to connect with your officer)
- Disabilities
- Medical conditions
- Mental health needs
- Military Status
Officers never see age, gender, ethnicity, or zip code.
Real-Time Notifications
When a traffic violation occurs, BlueJay sends a push notification prompting the driver to pull over. Once opened, the driver can view the officer’s photo, name, and department, confirming the legitimacy of the interaction.
The BlueJay Driver Experience Questionnaire
24 hours after a stop, drivers are invited to complete the BlueJay Driver Experience Questionnaire, allowing thoughtful reflection before responding. The questionnaire is anonymous and gives drivers a voice in sharing their experience, while helping support transparency and accountability.
For Law Enforcement
Lack of information about a driver being pulled over can lead to guesswork and poor decisions, as officers are trained to anticipate worst-case scenarios and to look for suspicious behavior that certain medical conditions, disabilities, or language barriers can mimic. The BlueJay Driver Profile provides the necessary information to conduct a fair, intentional interaction during a traffic stop.
Humanizing Context
The BlueJay Officer Interface, located inside the patrol vehicle, provides officers with humanizing context that helps them understand the driver before approaching the car. It supports tailored communication, accommodations, and calm interactions.
Data-Driven Improvement
Police departments receive feedback through the BlueJay Driver Experience Questionnaire, which is based on the police code of conduct and developed with law enforcement to address car-side manner. Responses are collected, indexed, and shared with participating agencies, providing transparent, ongoing insight into community experiences and supporting detailed officer evaluation and performance assessment.
Officer Commendations
Drivers have the opportunity to recognize officers who go above and beyond, providing positive feedback for a job well done. More positive interactions help shift perspectives, fostering greater understanding and trust between drivers and officers.
